The first time I had Botox injected, about 15 years ago, I was considered “brave” for talking about it. I’m not sure why – many of my friends had signed up for the treatment too – but few were willing to admit it. Today, Botox injections are a part of many people’s skin care routine, and I’m still happy to share my experience.
More than two years had passed since my last treatment so the effects were long gone. I’ve always liked the mini lift and smoothing effect that Botox gives so it was time in March for a long overdue refresh. I researched various clinics before deciding upon Dr. Shannon Humphrey in Vancouver. I wanted an experienced board-certified cosmetic dermatologist who’s conservative approach matched my own. I always recommend going to a doctor who can assess what you need and describe any potential side effects.
I was looking for a subtle touch to soften my frown lines and the squinty lines around my eyes. I still remember how my first treatment 15 years earlier had frozen my face with a tight mask-like effect. No thanks. All I wanted now was to smooth out the worry lines across my forehead and between my eyes, and to give a subtle lift above my eyebrows. I appreciated Dr. Humphrey’s cautious “Baby Botox” approach – a smaller dose of injections in targeted areas. She carefully inspected the impact on my follow-up visit two weeks later, and added a little more above my eyebrows to lift their appearance and “open up” my eyes.
Does it hurt? Not at all. Injections are tiny pokes that are administered in seconds. The little dots at the injection site disappeared almost immediately. I applied a tinted moisturizer and was ready for work.
It can take up to two weeks to get the full effect of the injections which last for several months. I’ll get a touch-up twice a year to maintain the effect. And I plan to pair Botox with other skin rejuvenating treatments such as laser facials and Volite (an injectable moisturizing treatment) for a complete skincare regimen. I’ll let you know how that goes in my next post. In the meantime, check out www.humphreyderm.com and @humphreyderm on Instagram.
